History of Hunter Marine shipyard
The Hunter Marine shipyard, based in the United States, is renowned for building robust and versatile sailboats. Founded in 1974, it produced iconic models such as the Hunter 356, appreciated for its stability, interior space, and reliability. This model was produced between the 1990s and 2000s, with a reputation as a family boat and an offshore cruiser. The Hunter 356s were primarily built in the United States, with particular attention given to material quality and ergonomics.
Technical specifications of the Hunter 356
The Hunter 356 is a 10.80-meter-long sailboat with a 3.66-meter beam and a 1.46-meter draft (lead keel). Its rigging is designed to provide good handling at all points of sail, even in challenging wind conditions. This model stands out for its spacious saloon, convertible into a double berth, as well as its two double cabins: a forward cabin and a particularly wide owner’s cabin aft (200x160 cm mattress). My Hunter 356 has benefited from rigorous maintenance in recent years. In 2022, a full soda blasting was carried out, followed by an inspection of through-hull fittings and an anti-osmosis treatment. The sail drive was serviced with seal replacements and an oil change, as well as the heat exchanger and belts. The Elvstrom sails (full-batten mainsail and roller-furling genoa) are in good condition, with recent upgrades such as automatic reefing points and lines led back to the cockpit. An 8 m² storm jib is also included, never used. Electrical and electronic equipment has been modernized, with service batteries replaced in 2020 and a 200W solar system for improved autonomy.
Engine and performance
The boat is equipped with a Yanmar 27 HP engine with a fuel consumption of 2 liters/hour. The oil change and filters are performed every 100 hours. The Kiwiprop 3-blade propeller offers excellent efficiency, and the 140-liter stainless steel diesel tank provides good range. The sail drive was overhauled in 2022, ensuring reliable propulsion.
Electrical and electronic equipment
The electrical system is complete and modern: 4x110Ah service batteries (2020), a 75Ah engine battery (2020), an automatic 220V charger, and a 100A alternator charger. Lighting is entirely 12V LED, and two 100W solar panels provide partial autonomy for the fridge, autopilot, and lighting. Onboard electronics include a Raymarine ST40 Tri-data speed/depth/wind instrument, paired with an ICOM GPS/VHF, a Raymarine ST6000 autopilot with remote control, a radar, an AIS, and a Navtex. An ultrasonic anti-fouling system protects the hull while in port.
Deck and safety equipment
The deck is equipped with an electric windlass with remote control, 50 meters of 10 mm chain, and 30 meters of mooring line. Four serviced Lewmar winches (2x40St and 2x36St) facilitate maneuvers. The boat features a hardtop dodger, a Bimini, a folding cockpit table, a hot/cold shower, and a swim platform. For safety, it is equipped for offshore category with a 6-person liferaft (due for servicing), flares, a fire extinguisher, two safety harnesses, two inflatable life jackets, and six life vests.
Interior comfort and layout
The interior is very spacious for a boat of this size. The saloon converts into a double berth, with a functional chart table. The galley is equipped with a 2-burner stove + oven, a 110L fridge, a double sink, and a 220V microwave. Hot and cold pressurized water is available, with two water tanks (120L aft and 165L forward). The head compartment includes a marine toilet, a shower with partition, and a sink. The 110L black water tank is fitted with a macerator pump. The owner’s cabin aft offers ample storage space and a cockpit-facing porthole.
