Owner's comments

DEAN 440
  • Description of the Dean 440

I am the owner of a Dean 440 from 2002, a catamaran built by Dean Catamarans in Cape Town, South Africa. This boat has been our full-time home in French Polynesia for the past three years, but health issues now force us to change our lifestyle.

    Technical Specifications

In the pursuit of extreme sailability, all Dean catamarans feature very buoyant bows with the fore deck well forward and a small trampoline area. They have asymmetrical hulls, where the outer curvature is much more pronounced than the inner curvature, reducing the wave-making action between the hulls (reduced Venturi effect). This, combined with a high bridge clearance, significantly reduces slamming under the bridge, while improving overall performance.

Another feature of Dean catamarans is the mast raked back 7 degrees. This unusual characteristic improves both the sailboat's performance to windward and its ability to tack without the difficulties associated with some other catamarans.

Why I Chose This Dean 440

I have loved my Dean 440 for many reasons. First, the Dean 440 offers a perfect blend of space, comfort, and performance. I can sail much better than an ordinary catamaran, while remaining comfortable and maneuverable. Additionally, the boat has a lower galley, which offers much more comfort and usable space than upper galleys, which are more rental-oriented.

    Boat History

This Dean 440 has had 3 owners. The first owner was American, and the boat was based on the East Coast of the United States. In 2016, the boat was purchased by the second owner – a German. He sailed in the Caribbean and transited the Panama Canal at the end of 2019, arriving in French Polynesia in March 2020. I purchased the vessel in Tahiti on August 1, 2022, and since then, I have lived aboard full-time in French Polynesia. Currently in active use and cruising. The vessel was "Papeetized" / imported into French Polynesia in March 2023.

Over €60,000 has been spent on the boat in recent years. See the appendix for a complete summary of the boat's history and equipment. The boat is located in French Polynesia and flies the German flag.

    Equipment and Amenities

The Dean 440 is equipped with a Yanmar 4JH100 engine from 2006 with approximately 3000 hours of operation. It also has a Fischer Panda 6000i generator from 2016. The boat has two air conditioners in the salon and cabins, ensuring optimal comfort even in hot climates.

The boat is equipped for long-term navigation, with a full kitchen, a modern navigation system, and high-quality safety equipment. There is also a marina slip available, which is a considerable advantage for future owners.

Why This Dean 440 is Interesting

The Dean 440 is particularly interesting for several reasons. First, it offers an excellent space/comfort/performance ratio, making it an ideal choice for sailing enthusiasts. Secondly, its rigorous maintenance history and recent investments in equipment and amenities make it a boat ready to sail without worries. Finally, the presence of a marina slip and a generator are major assets for comfort and practicality.
